The history of Kamide Kiyama begins in 1841, when Kisaburo started the pottery business. Until then, the Kamide family had been working as farmers. The third generation was born in Ishikawa Prefecture's Enuma District, Tetsushi Village, now Sakaetani Town, Kaga City, as the second son of Taro Kamide. He began learning the techniques of Kutani ware from his uncle Sanjiro when he was 10 years old. In 1916, he entered the Dohachi kiln in Kiyomizu, Kyoto. There, he began training in the art of pottery. When he returned home, while helping his father with his work, he received guidance in design and pottery making from Tosen Adachi, who was known as the master craftsman of Kutani, and his assistant Eiji Nagata. He also worked as a painter at the Takamori Masa pottery in Terainomachi.
When he became independent as a potter, he changed his name to Seisan. He opened a sales channel in Shikoku through a drug dealer in Toyama, but his business was discontinued due to the war. Later, he built a French-style square kiln and held an exhibition of Kiyama's pottery with his first kiln works. Since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs purchased the chintz plate decorated with small crests, most of the works exhibited at exhibitions have been purchased by the Imperial Household Agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His works have been presented to state guests from various countries. At the 10th exhibition, a set of small crest bowls and a checkered crest plate won the top prize. As a result, he quickly gained attention, and the following year, he was recommended as a regular member of the Japan Crafts Association.
